Originally it was used to describe jazz musicians and members of swing bands. However with time jazz environment started use it referring to anybody who was engaged in growing jazz community and culture.
This term was always connected with an impeccable style, search of new solutions and willigness to learn. The hepcat was up to date, knew the answers and searched for new forms – especially in music.
Over time hepcat has evolved into hepster, and finally hipster.
